Shor In The City (Hindi)
Release Date:
April 28, 2011When the noise is deafening, can you really hear yourself ? That is the underlying thought that runs through this gritty, grounded film that revolves around three loosely interconnected stories set in the midst of the noise and grime of Mumbai during the Ganpati festival.
Abhay, an outsider, is forced to come to terms with the fact that he is alone in an unwelcoming city, which he thought was home. Living in a comfortable shell, he soon discovers that he might not be different from the thousands that mill around the city.
Tilak, an honest bootlegger, who pulls scams with his unruly buddies, chances upon a rare loot on a local train, which opens up new, dangerous avenues for them. He is pulled into the unlikely adventure of findings an empty place in the overpopulated city where they can blast a bomb….. For kicks!
Young Sawan has one goal, and more importantly, the only option – to get into the Mumbai Junior Cricket team. In a city where corruption is a way of life, the goal comes at a price1 he needs to find the money first.
In the overcrowded urban landscape that forms the backdrop of this film, the right and wrong are blurred, giving way to the more basic need to survive and succeed. As the characters come to grips with the noise – from within and outside – you realize that in this city, which runs on its own ad hoc rules, you don’t need an excuse to be good or bad; especially bad!
Another dark comedy that deals with the grit of the city. Fortunately, it is another well-made dark comedy. Shor in the city is well-shot and has good performances. It also has a few well-developed, interesting characters. Yet, the plot gives a very "been there, seen that" feel
SITC is of three ways of living lives, of three shades of human emotions, of three colours of aspirations through the commonalities of three different groups of people. Their paths intersect each other casually at few points, converge, and disperse while being conceptually parallel.
“Shor in the city” is a pretty hatke film from the directors of the entertaining 99. It is about maximum city Mumbai, and the people that call it their home. This superb film is not the traditional single hero/heroine venture, but features three narratives running in parallel. . .
I finally seemed to have found some good movies this year. Shor in the City is slick. It's hard-hitting. It's unpretentious. It's got characters that are real, a story we can all relate to, yet not something we've seen before. There's no character black or white. As the story progresses, its the multi-layeredness of each character that arrests you and you don't want the movie to end.
Unlike most Bollywood films that end up too long and stretched, this one's short and snappy. The good part is it's not trying too hard to impress the audiences. It builds up a pace of its own and effortlessly absorbs you into it.
After watching films like SITC and Khakee, I can conveniently say Tushar Kapoor is not a waste of actor. Overall, great direction, superb screenplay, tight editing, peppy music (Saibo - link below) and outstanding performances. Don't miss it!
