Do Dooni Chaar (Hindi)
Release Date:
October 08, 2010When was the last time you saw something – on a window display, on Amazon.com, in the flight magazine – and told yourself, "Someday, I'll buy that!" Santosh Duggal fights that battle almost every day! His animated family's needs far surpass his paycheck. After all, how much does an average Indian school teacher make? Probably 3 fancy dinners at the Marriott. But they are happily living in their little middle class Delhi paradise. And then one day, arrives Phupho, Duggal's 'little' sister from Meerut. She is here to invite them to a wedding at her in laws and give them an ultimatum. They have to come by a car. The only problem is that the Duggals don't own a car. Phupho's solution? "Khareed lo!" There is too much of Phupho's pride at stake to cancel going to the wedding.
So the Duggal's gear up for their first big purchase in years. The piggy banks are emptied, the PF is encashed, a loan is in the offering, new hiding places in the house are found, where everyone discreetly kept their savings... and secrets. But the real battle lines are drawn within the house. The four of them can't seem to agree on anything – the car, the make, the colour... Like Payal says, "Hamaare ghar par discussions aise hi hote hai!" A mad journey ensues. After putting together all their resources, there is one big hole that remains to be filled. And then comes a gigantic lurking temptation. An easy way out... Will they take it? Do Dooni Chaar will revive your memories of your own family's story. It is the story of the middle class man and his tireless endeavor in coping with the fast, new 'India Shining'. It's funny, real and heart warming. We all have our own scooter to car tales. We are all our own Duggal. Do Dooni Chaar makes us see the Duggal in us with the rare chance to laugh at ourselves.
Stories from the lives of the middle class, a generation gap where the children want to move up to the next level in socio-economic ladder. Sounds boring and is too. But the relationships are warm and the issues are real. Unfortunately there is a patch in between which makes the film a drag. That along with the preaching takes away from the crisp film it could have been.
The film is a refreshing change and is sure to leave you with a smile.
Duggal family, which struggles to make ends meet, is on cloud nine when it gets to 'splurge' a few extra grands off an income tax rebate. The son wants a new iPod, while the daughter will agree on nothing less than a dish TV. The mother (Neetu Singh), meanwhile is all excited to replace the old shabby fridge. All this, until the phone rings! It's phuffo (their bua). It's an invitation for a wedding of some xyz relative of hers. An invitation with 'strings attached.' The flat broke 'Bajaj-scooter' Duggal family must come in a car. And CRASH! Their dreams go to pieces. To make matters worse, they now have extra expenses to bear.
What follows is a fun ride. The narrative, light-heartedly, unfolds the situations the Duggals face, in their quest to fulfil what-may-seem-trivial wishes. The title is reflective of the minutest of calculations involved, for a middle-class family, to make ends meet. It's a film for us, about us. All characters are relatable. The kids, for instance, are as rebellious as the ever-sacrificing parents. Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor are adorable. Their chemistry is sure to make you forget the most loved pairs in the industry today.
Somewhere towards the end, the film gets a lil preachy. But a one time watch won't hurt.
