Phas Gaye Re Obama (Hindi)
Release Date:
December 03, 2010Phas Gaye Re Obama is a comedy set against the backdrop of global recession. The film traces the journey of Om Shashtri, an American citizen of Indian origin, who loses all his wealth overnight to the global recession & has been asked to vacate his home by the bank unless he pays up $100,000 (mortgaged amount) within 30 days.
Seeing no other option Om comes to India to sell a small piece of an ancestral property. But within days of landing in India he is kidnapped by a ‘recession-hit’ underworld gang those who think that he is still a millionaire. What happens to Om, is he able to save his home, how did the ‘poor’ gangster cope with their ‘poor’ catch & what do small town Indian gangsters have to say to President Obama… that’s what the film is all about.
Phas Gaye Re Obama is witty, crass slapstick, satirical and repetitive in turns. Every goon in town and the politician too is chasing an American dream -that of kidnapping an American based desi for some quick ransom money. Let your imagination go berserk around this situation, Phans Gaye Re Obama offers that and more - in terms of laughs, "eeeews", and plain and simple "blehs".
Brilliant concept royally rogered!
The last 10 minutes leave you with a smile. But that's all. PGRO unfolds really slow. You almost want to tear your hair off as it moves on and y(awn)! Thanks to the director, the two hours seem like eternity. He has an interesting (and different) story to tell but fails miserably in its execution.
While characters like Anni (a local gangster who only dreams of going to Amrika), bhaisaab, the head of the gang (played by Sanjay Mishra), NRI Om Shastri (played by Rajat Kapoor), absorb you (almost!), others like our female Gabbar Singh (Neha Dhupia) and her quirky gang, are hard to swallow.
Plot - Om Shastri beaten down by the recession, comes to India to sell his ancestral home, so he can pay off his debt. The film takes you through the mess, he gets caught in, while trying to sell the haveli. Bhai saab, jinhe "apna career banana hai, gentry mein jana hai" [wants to make a career, lead a hi-fi life] does all he can to kidnap Om Shashtri, (for whom he's been waiting for the last 7 years) and extract some ransom, only to find that Mr. NRI is all broke. Bhai saab's dreams are just about to shatter before Mr Shastri comes to his rescue with a brilliant idea! The film is not without laughs but moves at snail pace. Critics will love it, but I doubt the audience will, as much. You might just want to wait for the DVD!
