English Vinglish (Hindi)
Release Date:
October 05, 2012Money, Fame and the Knowledge of English. In India, these 3 factors play a huge role in how society judges an individual.
English Vinglish is the story of a woman who does not know English and is made to feel insecure by her family and society at large. The film is a light - hearted yet touching and transformational journey of Shashi. Circumstances make her determined to overcome this insecurity, master the language, teach the world a lesson on the way to becoming a self assured and confident woman.
The film is shot mostly in New York and captures the inherent struggle of many people all over the world with the English Language. Hilarious, touching, sensitive, and this film marks the come back of India's biggest female star...Sridevi.
A simple Indian woman's complexes are explored with warmth and charm. Sridevi brings to us a home-maker's self-doubt with a wonderful performance despite the squeak in her voice and distracting accent. The keen must watch on screen; else DVD.
Shashi is an uncomplicated verse and her emotional turbulence, a short story in prose. This prose is quite familiar and so is the verse: from the way Shashi ties her hair to the way she gives a roundish shape to her sweet creations; from the pride overflowing in her eyes at being referred to as an 'entrepreneur' to the closeted tears in her eyes; from being left alone to being desired. It is an amazing experience to watch such a genuine representation of what we see around.
Good acting, a decent cast, apt music and a reasonable pace make this a good film. The film is written and directed strongly – so kudos to Gauri Shinde. The characters are developed well enough – Shashi is a little too patient and good, but I liked her anyway . . .
English Vinglish is one of the best films of the year and must not be missed.
English Vinglish is all about the grammar of filmmaking
The noun (Any of a class of words naming or denoting a person, thing, place, action, quality, etc.)
The title, ‘English Vinglish’ reflects the relationship a copywriter shares with Angrezi. (Copywriter is a salesman in writing, as David Ogilvy would like to put it). It’s a language that’s more than just bread & butter for any copywriter – sometimes a boon and sometimes a bane, sometimes a muse and sometimes an abuse. So it’s indeed no wonder that Gauri Shinde, a copywriter at Lowe Lintas (Can we keep the ‘wife of Balki’ tag aside, please?), chose a subject revolving the Queen’s language for her debut film.
The preposition (A relation or function word that connects a lexical word to another element of the sentence, as to a verb)
English Vinglish revolves around the life of a housewife with weak English and strong determination. Sridevi makes a grand comeback with this heartwarming film and brings back the sheen of acting through a nuanced performance. Hadn’t it been for Sridevi, the role would have surely landed on the lap of Vidya Balan, simply because there’s a serious dearth of female actors in a crowd of ‘Darrrlings’, ‘Chamelis’, and ‘Halkats’.
