Dabangg (Hindi)
Release Date:
September 10, 2010"I do not want to be sheltered from dangers. I want to be fearless while facing them" Dabangg means fearless. Set in Laalgunj, Uttar Pradesh, Dabangg is a story of Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan), a totally fearless but corrupt police officer with unorthodox working methods. But even the most fearless at times face a tough fight with their innermost demons.
Chulbul has had a bitter childhood. His father passed away when he was very young after which his mother Naini (Dimple Kapadia) married Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna). Together, they had a son Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan). Prajapati favours Makhanchan which does not go down well with Chulbul. He decides to take control of his destiny and detaches himself from his stepfather and half brother. His sole attachment is his mother. However after his mother's demise and an unsuccessful attempt to mend wounds, Chulbul snaps all ties with his stepfather and half brother.
Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha) with her unique perspective of life enters his world and turns it upside down. Chulbul starts to see life more positively and also gets sensitized to the value of a family. But his detractors especially the dubious Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood) have their own vested interests and emerge as spokes in the wheel, putting one brother against the other. Makhanchan ends up carrying out acts oblivious to the consequences. When he realizes he has been used, he turns to Chulbul.
Will Chulbul take his extended hand? Will the brothers be able to thwart their detractors? Will this time, Chulbul's fearlessness channelize itself positively and reunite him with his family? Dabangg is a hard hitting, entertaining, emotional narrative that unfolds grippingly in a region that has place only for the fearless.
“Mote wale istaraf, patle wale ustaraf aur fit wale mere peeche,†commands the police officer Robinhood Pandey urf Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) to his police team while chasing the goons. Chulbul’s team pursues his instruction too seriously and so no one is left behind him. ‘Dabaang’ is set in the Laalgunj village of Uttar Pradesh and is suggestive of the outlawed and nefarious system rampant in those places.
Dabangg, and more so, Salman Khan, won't even allow a reviewer her right to roll her eyes. How can she be the snoot who ignores a packed house is dancing and clapping its way to the background score of an action sequence? She laughs at the silliness on screen and off. She walks out of the theater feeling happy for the people who had come to enjoy and made sure they had a good time. But enjoy, for her own self, did she? Nope. Not a chance.

Dabangg is uninhibited, unpretentious, adrenaline-thumping, all-male, front-bencher, whistle-worthy masala entertainment which works because of one thing. Salman Khan. Take that away and all one is left with are gimmicks and some snazzy SFX. And one peppy item number.
This film runs along pretty smoothly, except for some time post-interval when it gets a little too cheesy. Director Kashyap guides with a strong hand. Dabangg has some beautifully executed fight sequences, in slo-mo, done very Matrix-style. The music also earns it brownie points; there’s the now famous “Munni badnaam huiâ€, pictured on a vigorously hip-swinging Malaika, and the soulful “Tere mast mast do nain†to do it credit. Dabang has all the ingredients of the masala perfectly placed. It does fallback to a older genre that I would deem “villageyâ€, tom-tomming the benefits of brawn (and un-education) over brains, but counters that with a sophisticated filming technique.
This film has mass appeal, is out there and outrageous, and unafraid of being what it is - no pretensions. You do not require a brain to view this film, and in that category (which has its share of idiotic films), this is one of the better ones. If you’re looking for a tangible story-line, nuance and character depth, Dabangg is not for you (pick "Do dooni char" instead). A bonafide Friday night entertainer, loud and deafening, Dabangg is worth a watch.
